Heat Wave Alert in Karachi
Karachi residents are being warned to prepare for a heatwave expected to hit the city starting tomorrow, Wednesday, May 29th, 2024. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Karachi, forecasting daytime maximum temperatures to soar between 40°C and 42°C (104°F and 107.6°F) for the next three days.
This heat wave is expected to be particularly intense due to high humidity levels, making it feel even hotter than the actual temperature. This combination can be dangerous, especially for vulnerable groups like young children, elderly individuals, and those with chronic health conditions.
The expected heat wave comes on the heels of high temperatures already being felt in Sindh province. Several districts, including Larkana and Jacobabad, have recorded temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit). In various districts of rural Sindh, the heatwave continues, with temperatures recorded at 51.5 degrees Celsius in Mohenjo-Daro and 51 degrees Celsius in Rohri.
What to Expect
The combination of scorching temperatures and minimal sea breeze can turn even simple tasks into struggles. This can quickly lead to heat-related illnesses, especially for those who are most vulnerable. Be aware of the signs of heatstroke, dehydration, and heat exhaustion. Heatstroke is the most serious and requires immediate medical attention. Dehydration can cause headaches, dizziness, and fatigue, while heat exhaustion leads to heavy sweating, weakness, nausea, and vomiting.
